Sundhed og Omsorg (Health and Care) in Norddjurs Municipality covers a wide range of services and functions that together ensure care, rehabilitation, health promotion, and support for citizens of all ages.
We work from a rehabilitative approach, aiming to help citizens live active and independent lives. We have approximately 1,000 employees with many different professional backgrounds who work together to carry out several different tasks.
The proportion of older citizens in the Danish population is expected to increase in the coming years, while a shortage of employees in the elderly care sector is anticipated. Therefore, we need more people, also from abroad, who can help carry out the tasks within the health and care sector. This includes both professionally trained healthcare staff and unskilled workers.
There are also opportunities to pursue a healthcare education while working and receiving a salary during your education. Our nursing homes and home care services in particular need more staff.
Sundhed og Omsorg operates several nursing homes across the municipality, as well as home care services that cover the entire area.
The nursing homes are home to citizens who can no longer manage everyday life in their own homes. Here, they receive support and care in a safe environment. Home care consists of personal care and practical assistance or support with tasks in the citizen’s own home.
Employees in home care travel by car or bike to citizens within their assigned area.

In Denmark, we have two different educations (besides becoming a nurse) that prepare you to work with health care, for instance in nursing homes and home care units.
Social and health care worker ("social- og sundhedshjælper") is a basic caregiver education focused on providing personal and practical help on a daily basis. Graduates mostly work in nursing homes and with health care in the home.
Social and health care assistant ("social- og sundhedsassistent") is a pre-nursing education with subjects including psychiatry and pharmacology. Graduates typically work in nursing homes, home care units, hospitals, and special care facilities. Completion of the programme also qualifies the student for bachelor level studies in nursing and social work.
Both courses start with an introductory course. However, younger students must complete both Introduction Course 1 and Introduction Course 2 before starting their education as a social and health care worker or social and health care assistant. Older students must complete Introduction Course 2. The two introductory courses each take 20 weeks.
Introduction Course 1 is solely for younger students who have finished primary and lower secondary school within the previous 14 months. It is general in topic and gives the student a bit of experience in working with people of all ages and in all phases of life.
Introduction Course 2 takes aim at one specific main programme, i.e. social and health care. Through tuition and practical activities, the student learns about working to improve people’s daily lives and the different challenges one faces in different phases of life. The student is likely to thrive in Introduction Course 2 if they want to work with people in all phases of life and of all ages, and to become a competent health care person who works with e.g. hygiene, health, communication and living conditions for the elderly, sick and disabled.
More about the two courses:
Social and health care worker: Social and health care worker is the shorter of the two elderly care programmes with a focus on providing practical assistance. It takes one year and two months to complete. Student social and health care workers provide professional care and practical assistance to citizens in the municipalities from a rehabilitating point of view. It is the student’s task to help structure the citizen’s everyday life, and the student often has regular dealings in the lives of elderly people. The student works with early detection of diseases and symptoms, nutrition, and dementia and with relatives of people with degenerative mental disease, etc.
The social and health care assistant: This programme takes almost three years to complete. It qualifies the student for further studies in the fields of nursing and social work. Student social and health care assistants work with professional, holistic nursing and rehabilitation. The work is carried out in collaboration with citizens and patients with basic needs in a cross-professional and cross-sectoral partnership in the near and interconnected health service. The student meets the citizens in the interconnected patient programme, and he or she must coordinate and ensure cohesion between hospital and home. The student provides nursing based on clinical guidelines and ensures that procedures are documented correctly. The student works with e.g. medicine, early detection, and screening, and they must be able to work with e.g. rehabilitation and health promotion.
